Kooth: counselling for children online
Kooth is a new online mental health support service commissioned by Greenwich GGC for children in our area. It gives children and young people easy access to an online community of peers and a team of experienced counsellors. Access is free of the typical barriers to support: no waiting lists, no thresholds, no cost and complete anonymity. Accredited by the BACP, more than 1,500 children and young people across the country login to Kooth every day.
The service offers easily accessible mental health support to young people, irrespective of where they are on a spectrum of mild, moderate or complex need.
Young people can log on to Kooth.com from any connected device wherever they are 365 days a year to access help and support for their mental wellbeing.
Qualified counsellors are available to support any child or young person in one-to-one sessions, from 12-noon until 10pm on weekdays, and from 6pm until 10pm on weekends.
Kooth offers access to self-help materials, mood-tracking and goal setting tools, counsellor messaging and peer-to-peer support through moderated online forums. The forums address issues that range from exam stress and depression to self-harm and relationship problems.
Kooth is anonymous and free to use.
Their safeguarding policies are paramount and strictly monitored and maintained. Therapists receive regular training to ensure they are providing the highest level of professional support via a range of therapeutic approaches (working to the THRIVE model). Kooth works hand-in-hand with local services on the ground, often supporting young people preparing for treatment or on CAMHS waiting lists.
